What's Happening at The Transition House, Inc.
St.Cloud, FL – Five residents currently enrolled in The Transition House’s men’s residential program graduated from a Construction Training Program sponsored by CareerSource and Valencia College. The program, Project OPEN (Osceola Poverty Elimination Network), was started two years ago to give the transitionally housed, homeless, and very low income a career start with short-term training. The goal is to give these individuals a start in a career in which they will earn a livable wage, and they will have the opportunity to further their education should they want to.
The Transition House is a local non-profit agency that provides behavioral health services to veterans and civilians. The Transition House strives to equip their residents with skills that will enable them to live a successful life after the rehabilitation program.
As the client progresses in The Transition House’s program, they are introduced to partners within the community such as Career Source, where individuals are able to sign up for a skills and job placement course. Veterans participating in the program receive training in all facets of facilities maintenance and general construction, including carpentry, electrical wiring, landscaping, HVAC, painting, plumbing, weatherization, and OSHA 10.
All five students graduated with their OSHA certification, CPR, and First Aid and a certificate in Basic Construction. They also graduated with three college credits. These students have tools, boots, safety equipment, and so much more. CareerSource has agreed to pay for all of the Valencia College short-term continuing education classes if the clients qualify.
“CareerSource helps The Transition House residents tremendously. Partnerships like this give our residents confidence to face the world when they are finished with their rehabilitation, and that is invaluable,” says Tom Griffin, CEO of The Transition House.
“We want to extend a huge congratulations to these clients that committed to the program and were determined and motivated to graduate this program. 3 of those 5 clients have already found employment,” says Jennifer Dellasanta, COO of the Transition House
The Transition House works with CareerSource, Goodwill Industries, and other similar organizations.
